UMBC’s Mock Trial Team has been established for the purpose of educating members and the student body about our legal system, jurisprudence, and the work of attorneys. Our primary goal is to facilitate individual growth while the competitive aspect of mock trial is secondary. The ideals of fairness, civility, and justice should guide the actions of its respective members.
Why Join?
UMBC Mock Trial has established itself as one of the top programs in the country, achieving remarkable success on the national stage:
- #1 Ranking in 2022: This wasn’t just about our 2021 National Championship. We secured this ranking by excelling for three consecutive years at AMTA Nationals, one of the toughest competitions in the nation. No school like UMBC—a smaller, non-flagship public university—has achieved this in over a decade.
- 33 Individual Awards: UMBC Mock Trial members have earned 33 All-American and All-National awards, likely the highest in the country over the past five years. These awards recognize the best individual performances at Nationals and Semifinals.
- Top-Tier Invitationals: We’ve placed at some of the strongest invitational tournaments in the country, though some have become financially out of reach for us.
- Homegrown Talent: Every member of our 2021 National Championship team was a graduate of a Maryland public high school.
- Peer Comparison: After our 2021 win, the next national champions were Harvard, UCLA, and Virginia. Before us, Yale, Miami (OH), Virginia, and Harvard took the titles. No school like UMBC has competed in a national final round since 2009.
